Reading Online Sellers Beat the Recession

Local Entrepreneurs Share their Secrets at First ‘Start to Sell Online’ Event

From mums in their front rooms earning extra money selling old baby clothes, through to small and medium-sized business turning over hundreds of thousands of pounds, entrepreneurs in Reading are using the internet to buck the recession, make money and grow their businesses, according to new research.

Now, two successful local entrepreneurs are sharing their tips for success at a free ‘Start to Sell Online’ event, to be held at 7pm, 5th June 2009 at the Holiday Inn Reading – South (visit at http://starttosellonline.co.uk for full details).

Based in Thatcham Berkshire, Chris Dawson, who sells computer equipment, and John Pemberton who sells designer clothes, hope to roll out their ‘Start to Sell Online’ scheme nationally.

“With household budgets squeezed and redundancies rising, sites like eBay provide an easy, low risk way to earn a little extra cash on the side, start up a business or create a full-time online income” said Dawson.

“Thousands of people in Reading are already making the most of this opportunity. We hope to help more like them get an even better foothold on how to sell online.”

Reading for sale

200,000 savvy Brits make upwards of £5 a day home-selling on eBay in their spare time, whilst research by YouGov (2008) shows the average UK home has £450 worth of unwanted items to sell.

In 2008 alone, Reading residents cashed in on £22,300 worth of unwanted prams and pushchairs, £21,900 of exercise equipment and £16,900 of sofas selling on eBay.

At the business end, the online economy is predicted to grow 15% this year and eBay reported its top thousand sellers grew just under 30% during Xmas 2008 compared to the year before.

The kick-off event will host speakers from eBay, Royal Mail, Lloyds Bank, vzaar and Business Link as well as Dawson and Pemberton, and will cover everything from writing a business plan and raising finance, making money online, how to use rich media to best present your products, the best ways to get goods to your customers and where to turn for additional business guidance.

Anyone can register for the free event at http://starttosellonline.co.uk and there are just 50 places.

“We’re keeping the numbers down because we want everyone to be able to benefit from one on one advice from our panel of experts” said Pemberton.
